Once a quiet Florida backwater, sultry Miami's pristine beaches, pulsating clubs and luxe boutiques have attracted increasing droves of a-list celebrities, jetsetters, sun-seekers and hangers-on. Even those arbiters of pop-culture cool, the MTV Video Music Awards, have set up shop. While such flamboyance, excess and scandals grab the most headlines, Miami's stories extend well beyond infamous South Beach into Little Havana, the Design District, and the Biscayne Corridor. Fun is a must in Miami and striking architecture is a staple, from kitschy Art Deco hotels to the stately Spanish-style houses of Coral Gables and temples to mid-century modern design in North Miami Beach and Bal Harbor. A trip to Miami can feel like entering a surreal and tantalizing country, where anything can happen and often does.
